Orkut: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

If chat on the internet brought people together, social networking very well plunged them together into a can like sardines. Social networking, better known as the next big thing on the Internet, is finally here, with various kinds of people taking various kinds of advantages and disadvantages.

Orkut, is supposed to be one of the first major social networking channels, and may by far be the most successful of social networking avenues. However, Orkut has its own set of disadvantages. Here is a small list of disadvantages on Orkut:

  1. Too Open to Be True: Let's think about it. You are in a relation with a person. You break up, it doesn't even have to be your girl or boyfriend, it can be a bad mistake of a friend, or even a estranged relative. Keep in mind that even if you do not accept them as a friend, he or she can deface your scrapbook for all to see. Of course, one can tweak personal settings to stop this, but why should me trying to get back in touch with my old friends consume time?
  2. How well do you know the end of your list?: Another major problem. Friends of friends of friends. The problem can simply be described as A -B- C and so on and so forth till Z. It isn't entirely necessary that A wants to be acquaintances, let alone friends, with Z. Now, we all know that we can allow or reject friends, but with the Internet turning the entire world into a small village, paranoia is just another necessary evil netizens have to possess nowadays.
  3. This, Nuclear Energy: Simply put, Social Networking is nuclear energy. It can be used for good as well as for the bad. Just how many requests do guys and gals get saying 'lets do friendship', 'let us friend' and so on and so forth? Do you want to meet these people? Would you have met them if they met you at some party in real life? No. Then why do they have the option to meet you online, know about you, and horror of horrors, know about your professional and personal life?

To cut a long story short, Orkut is good, Orkutting does make a difference to a person when they are feeling lonely and dissatisfied with their entire world. But.. the catch lies in the amount of time you have to spend to keep a squeaky clean, safe haven for yourself on the internet. And with today's speed and need of time, there will be a day when people will outsource their social networking profiles to other erm.. financially convenient countries. Don't look at me like that, they already have outsourced their MMORPG characters to us.
