J R D Tata

He was an entrepreneur when the spelling and meaning of the word were yet to be known and understood by the common public. He is still remembered for his ramrod straight principles and kindheartedness. He was the doyen of modern corporate India - He was Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata, JRD for short.

JRD Tata was born into one of the richest business houses in India of that time, the Tata's. As luck would have it, he became a chairman of the group when he was just thirty four years old, in 1938. Not only was he a excellent and principled businessman, he had a rare and true understanding of art and creativity.

JRD Tata was a man of firsts in every field that he went into. He was the forebear of commercial flying in India, as was his Tata Steel the first Indian company to have HRD, a department that is highly criticized today all over the world for their indifferent attitude towards the employees. However, JRD's HRD was different. It was built on this fundamental principle, "make the workers feel wanted'. And this he did, to the best of his potential.

He has pioneered the modern work day for Indians, with the eight hour day and the leave with pay being two of his gifts to the global Indian professional today.
