Sexual Harassment At The Workplace

The equal employment commission (EEOC-1980) define sexual harassment as unwelcome sexual advances request for sexual favors and other verbal or physical conduct of sexual nature constitutes sexual harassment when submission to or rejection of this conduct explicitly or implicitly affects an individual's employment , unreasonably interferes with individual's work performance or creates an intimidating hostile and offensive work environment. Almost 60 % of women in India are suffering from sexual harassment at work place. And many women were silent or unaware about issue of sexual harassment at work place .Employees are not only face stress and tension politics at work place , but sexual harassment is also major problem that most of the employees face.The victim of sexual harassment can be both men and women. In sexual harassment case it is not necessary that the man is the harasser but it could be the woman or the same sex person . The sexual harassment has taken place in many forms . The term sexual harassment includes acts like asking for dates and sexual favors , making inappropriate sexual gestures, passing sexual color jokes and remarks , discrimination of employee on basis of gender .These are obvious forms of sexual harassment . Acts like forcible physical touch , leering , hugging are also forms of sexual harassment pollute the work environment . It harms organizational harmony & relationship between colleagues . There are two types of sexual harassment . These are
1) Quid pro quo .
2) Hostile Work Environment .

In Quid pro quo harassment sexual favors are demanded and in turns some benefits are provided . Quid pro quo means this for that . Quid pro quo harassment takes place when some sexual compliance is especially for promotion favors or retaining one's job . Most of women rather than men suffer from this harassment . The offensive behavior such as unwanted touching ,off color jokes are common in Quid pro quo harassment . More than 15500 complaints were filed with EEOC in 1995 , most of these complaints come under quid pro quo sexual harassment . Case of sexual harassment of Rupan Bajaj was one of the well known case . Rupan Bajaj was slapped on bottom by D.G.P. of Panjab , K.P.S.Gill . Bajaj fought for eight years and she got justice .

In hostile work environment harassment makes the work place intolerable because of constant sexual or gender based activity or comment interferes with an employer's ability to do their job . This type of sexual harassment creates unfavorable work environment because it discriminates employee on basis of race ,ethnic group . Both these types of sexual harassments create unfavourable work environments . Sexual harassment at the work place leads to job dissatisfaction , low motivation to work and less productivity . It also disturbs psychological , physical , as well as social well being of workers .
