After The Kite Runner, Khaled Hosseini again takes us into the heart of Afghanistan with A Thousand Splendid Suns. Hosseini is known for explaining the complex relationship. In The Kite Runner he beautifully sketched the relationship between the father and the son while in A Thousand Splendid he put focus on the life and the relationships between the Afghan Women.

A Thousand Splendid Suns is a story of two Afghan women and their life. A novel starts in 70's with a story of Mariam. Mariam a harami child (bastard child) lives with her mother and supported by father who doesn't want to make her the legitimate child. After the death of her mother, Mariam is forced to marry Rasheed, 30 years older than her. Soon the free child Mariam becomes caged wife of Rasheed. She learns that essence of Afghan woman's life is endurance.

When Mariam finally submits to Rasheed, Hosseini starts the story of Laila. Laila is born in the family which with forward thoughts. But the war between warlords and Taliban forces makes her orphan at the age of fifteen. Rasheed saves Laila with the hiiden agenda of making her his second wife. As Taliban takes control of the Afghanistan, Rashid takes control of the life of two helpless women. Mariam accepts Laila first as rival and then as friend and together they fight with their destiny.

With the story Hosseini briefly explains the history of modern Afghanistan and political and cultural changes during the period. It doesnt remain the story from some alien land but we become start feeling the daily life of the Afghan people. He takes us to the various highs of the human emotions- from anger to the tears. And this is the reason that this novel is a true masterpiece.

It is not just a story of helpless women, it is story of the greatness of their endurance...It's story that tells us how ordinary people act extraordinarily when it is a need of time.
