Maid In Manhattan

Everyone loves a 'feel good movie'. There are of course, two types of feel good movies. One type of such feel good movies aim at just making you feel good, that's it. Its the other type of feel good movies that really make me wonder about the dizzying heights that the celluloid world can take our living standards to.

'Maid In Manhattan' is another feel good movie, which left me in a confused state. You see, the movie had all the ingredients to make it a benchmark in Hollywood, but it did not even grasp a percent of the concept the movie had.

Marisa is a Latina maid who works in a biggish hotel, and aims to join the management one day. Her world changes the day a local politician stays in her hotel, along with some other people. After that, the movie goes the same way such movies go, - find love - lose it - fight for it - find love again. Of course, the movie does justice to all of it's actors. Jennifer Lopez, one of the better singers/dancers transitioning into an actor, is the obvious main character of the movie, while Ralph Fiennes plays the role of a unbelievably sugary sweet rich guy.

But then, I was a bit dissatisfied with the movie. Here we have Jennifer Lopez, one of the most excellent examples of mixed ethnicity people making it big in the US of A, and the scriptwriter fails to milk the opportunity for its true worth. The movie had such a classic chance to make something of the working class and the politicians actually coming together and doing something, Lopez' character even hints, twice, in the film about a real worker speaking at some of the 'for the poor' rallies. But then, such issues are lost while deciding whether JLo looks good in Dolce or Versace.
