Great Dane - The Great Dog

Not only do dogs give people the much needed companionship, some kinds of dogs are also provide very good security. Standing tallest amongst all breeds of dogs is the Great Dane. The Great Dane is the tallest dog breed in the world, along with others like the Irish Wolfhound offering close competition. The tallest dog in the world as of 2004 was a Great Dane, with the name of Gibson. The Dane was from California.

Great Danes are said to be around for more than four hundred years. The first Great Dane sightings were in the fourth or fifth century. References to the Great Dane, more specifically as a hunting and a securing dog have been found in many mythologies like the Norse mythology. Apart from mythologies, the Great Dane has always been seen as a pet to royalty across centuries.

The minimum weight of a Great Dane is around one hundred to one hundred and twenty pounds. The minimum height is always between twenty five to thirty one inches. The Dane is the state dog of California. It is also the team mascot of the University of Albany.

Though the Great Dane has always been a majestic companion to royalty, the breed is marred wit various genetic disorders. Many Great Danes have congenital heart disease or dilated cardiomyopathy. Also, if the Great Dane has less color around it's eyes and ears, the organs may not be working. Many pure Great Danes are completely deaf.

Great Danes have always been a darling of popular media and cinema. The dog Ace, from the movie Batman Beyond, was a Great Dane. The legendary comic wimp Scooby was based on a Great Dane. Other than these, probably the most popular portrayal of a character by a Great Dane is still, Marmaduke in the comic strip Marmaduke.
