Computer Gaming:Introduction

Gone are the days when computer games were defined as part-time entertainment and the ability to play games on computers was just one of the added features – adding value but not utility.

The multi-million gaming industry has forced people from all walks of life to take a closer look into the game world, sometimes forcing major companies to leaf out into what could well be their future.

Like every big journey that started with small steps, there are a number of games which were a huge success and basically turned gaming into the thing that it is today – A alternate new world.

Today, there are all kinds of games available in the market, for the likes of everyone. Broadly, computer games can be divided into:

  • Action/Arcade/Adventure: The games are basically First Person Shooters/ Third Person Shooters or First Person action/Third Person Action games. Though these games had a hairline storyline traditionally and catered to the crash-boom-bang genre, many third person shooters today have become a world of their own. E.g.: Quake, Doom, Max Payne, Indiana Jones, and Blood Rayne.
  • Strategy: This genre literally caters to the gamers who have a lot of time on their hands. In this game, the players have to make strategies, and think more than action. Majority of strategy are ‘God Games’, whereas the entire game is played with an aerial camera view, which gives the player a better outlook of the game. E.g.: Caesar, Civilization, and Pharaoh.
  • Role Playing Game: This genre of games has the player take on a specific character or a group of characters. The game has a story line and various missions, who make the player ‘grow’ in the game. E.g. Dungeon Siege, Max Payne and Indiana Jones.
  • Simulation: The games in this genre ‘simulate’ the player. For example, simulation games are basically aircraft, space craft, cars and bike games. E.g. Descent, Road Rash
  • Sports: These games are generally sports oriented. Players can choose from a host of games like soccer, basketball, cricket and many more. E.g. Need For Speed, F1 Racing, Cricket.

These genres weren’t always there. Various landmark games have come and gone and literally welded out these genres from the slew of games made and played in the early 1970’s.
